大名鼎鼎的私家侦探赫邱里·波洛接受伦敦首富撒旦·巴特斯的邀请，出席撒旦在他超级豪华的公寓里举办的一次特殊私人聚会，同时接受邀请的，还有著名侦探小说作家奥利弗太太、警察局惠勒探长、长期从事政府秘密工作的休斯上校、罗伯茨医生、劳莱默夫人、梅杰·德斯帕德少校、安妮·梅雷迪思小姐。绅士般的寒暄介绍之后，撒旦以主人的身份举杯致辞，随后安排八名客人分两桌打起了桥牌，自己则坐到壁炉前的一把高靠背椅上，手里端着酒杯，小事休息。午夜时分，罗伯特医生第一个起身告辞，发现歪靠在椅子上的撒旦已经死亡，一把镶着宝石的尖刀直插心脏。除了八个应邀而来的客人，在不到两个半小时的时间里兴致昂然的玩着自己手里的牌，再没有管家、也没有仆人，更没有人进来，那么是谁杀死了撒旦先生呢？杀人的动机又是什么呢？波洛先生迅速与同桌打牌的奥立弗太太、惠勒探长、休斯上校展开分析，分析的结果是，凶手是另一张牌桌上的四个人中的一个。同是侦探专家，波洛与奥立弗太太、惠勒探长、休斯上校当即对其他四个人进行调查，同一张牌桌玩牌的四个人反应各一：罗伯茨医生觉得撒旦先生狂妄伤人，劳莱墨夫人认为撒旦生性恶毒，安妮·梅雷迪思小姐从心里害怕撒旦先生，梅杰·德斯帕德少校很讨厌撒旦先生难闻的体味。当然，这些都不足成为杀害撒旦的动机，可是谁又知道其中的隐情？像撒旦先生这样身家来历不明、过着豪富生活、结交八方宾客的神秘人物，是不是掌握不该掌握的秘密而遭致杀身之后呢？波洛先生的调查从牌桌上的一张计分表开始，四个人不同个性逐渐显现，因此引出的涉案各方人物更多不为人知的犯罪事实、乃至丑闻一一浮出水面。

As for perennially put-upon Ben, what with a new arrival causing chaos in the surgery, being forced to take tango lessons and being officially declared dead, life is just one long major-league cirsis.

The second series, Ben Harper, husband and father to three different and often difficult children has spent his working life as a dentist. Just as well as most of his life seems rather like pulling teeth. His wife Susan is usually busy showing foreign tourists around London, a place she knows much better than her own kitchen. Ben and Susan have been married happily enough to have three children. However, Ben has the feeling that most of the time his children seem to speak a different language. Nick (20) has persuaded his parents he would benefit from a gap year to see something of the world. To date, he has hardly seen anything beyond the confines of the sofa. Janey (17) is into boys, fashion labels (expensive ones) and getting her own way. Michael (14) is the brightest of the trio. He is seriously into computers, and, not so seriously (yet) into girls.

James Bentley is tried for the murder of Abigail McGinty, the charwoman of Broadhinny who also took in Bentley as her lodger. The evidence is overwhelming, and soon after he is sentenced to hang. Superintendent Spence is not convinced of the man's guilt, and so he visits Poirot, asking him to look into the case. Poirot then heads off to the village, where he becomes the paying guest of Maureen and Major Johnnie Summerhayes. Ariadne Oliver, Poirot's novelist friend, has also come to Broadhinny to collaborate on a stage adaptation of one of her novels with dramatist Robin Upward. With the clue of a bottle of ink purchased by the dead woman shortly before her death, Poirot searches Mrs. McGinty's belongings and finds an edition of The Sunday Comet newspaper, where an article concerning two women connected with famous murders has been cut out.
